Multiple Teams · PCA and the Recruiting Process for Parents and Athletes

Mike Brey is the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Notre Dame. He led his 2014-2015 team to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. His success in South Bend includes leading nearly every one of his teams to post-season play and being named Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2011.

In this video, Mike explains the importance a recruit’s parents. “It’s fair to say maybe we backed off offering a scholarship because I wasn’t sure I could communicate the right way with the parent…It’s such a big, big part of the equation.”

While watching a recruit play, he also watches a family’s reaction in the stands. Some of the parents Mike has most appreciated were those who played college sports and are more likely to understand a coach’s thinking. Perhaps most importantly, he assesses parents on the front end of the recruiting process and talks to recruits’ parents throughout.
