The Bay Rockets Varsity baseball team continued Great Lakes Conference action this afternoon at home. The Rockets defeated Buckeye 2-0 in a true pitcher’s duel.
Rockets pitcher, Junior Jay Rinehart, started the game and held Buckeye to only 4 hits in 6 innings of work. Rinehart struck out 5 and walked 3 on the day. Senior Cody DeVos came in relief in the seventh inning after Buckeye got the first 2 batters in the inning on base. DeVos got the first batter he faced to pop up to right fielder Cooper Mendelow, struck out the second batter he faced and got the final out on another pop fly to Mendelow to end the game. The Rocket pitching staff have recorded 4 shutout ball games in it’s last 5 games. Rinehart improves his record to 3-0 and DeVos picks up the save.
Offensively, the Rockets scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning which would prove to be all they needed. Junior Connor Bozak lead off the inning with a single that turned into a double when Buckeye CF and shortstop collided going after a ball in short left center field. Sophomore Evan Bottone sacrifice bunted Bozak to third putting him on scoring position. Sophomore Andrew Chesterfield drew a walk and stole second. Senior Aiden Cseh then hit what would then be the game winning hit to left center field, scoring Bozak and Chesterfield.
Th Rockets improve their overall record to 8-4, 5-2 in GLC play. They resume tomorrow Tuesday with conference play against Valley Forge at Valley Forge. Game time is 4:30PM.
